It’s always somebody’s fault when your direct selling business fails and never your own. There is drama with women every where you go and because of this, it hinders your personal direct selling business from growing, right? Did you ever stop to think that maybe your failure is because of you? Once you start changing the way you think, act, and assume, things might start to improve for you.
-
First, your up-line is not responsible for your growth or your failure. You may have signed up with the business under someone because that is the way the procedure goes. She or he can not prohibit you from growing your business and neither can the corporate office.
-
Second, if you become dependent on your up-line, you will fail. Your up-line has her own business to run. If there are meetings she schedules for regular training, but you can’t make it, follow up with another member of her team. Don’t assume your up-line will follow up with you when you miss his or her meeting.
-
Third, if you are getting caught up in all the drama, I’d have to say, you are part to blame. Stay away from it and move on. This is your business to run and the petty nonsense should not be permitted.
-
Fourth, don’t criticize corporate management for the drama that is going on in your team, including with your up-line. They have no control of that person’s behavior. Don’t be nasty and start bad mouthing the company or team you work for. Just because you and your up-line don’t see eye to eye, doesn’t mean the company is bad as a whole.
Remember, you joined a direct selling company as an “Independent” consultant or representative, not a “Dependent” one. You will have many expectations from people and the fact is, you are fully responsible for getting your business off the ground. You are responsible for increasing your product knowledge, managing your finances, building your team, and more. Normally, your up-line should personally be there for you in the first few weeks after you sign the contract, but if he or she is not, all hope should not be lost.
-
Call the customer service hotline that each direct selling company has and get all the answers to your questions there.
-
Call other members of your team (those you can count on) and see if they can help you.
-
Go on the corporate company’s website because most have online training material handy for anyone to access.
Running your own business should be fun and exciting, not frustrating and demotivating. Don’t give up when things get a little rough, but search for ways to get your business to the level you want on your own. Your success is your own to achieve.

Read my other blog post: Do you feel alone since you became a direct selling consultant?

I agree with you for the most part but their are some times where it is the upline’s fault for your business failing. These people are the reason that people get the “pyramid scheme” notion. They strictly get the people to buy into the business and then leave without any training or any support to let them know what to do.
You are right. I wish this wasn’t the case.
That people do what you say is a documented fact, David. Yet, even under those circumstances, it STILL isn’t your upline’s fault. As Madeline so eloquently shows us, the success and failure of your business is YOUR responsibility. For example, I saw an episode of Undercover Boss. It focused on the Budget Blinds franchise. In Chicago, the CEO found out that a few franchisees felt corporate wasn’t spending enough money on local advertising (something he fixed). Yet some of those franchisees took extra money, pooled it together, and paid for local advertising from which they benefited. Could corporate have done that? Sure, and they eventually did. But the franchise owners didn’t sit around saying. “Woe is me! If only corporate would…” They went out and made it happen. It’s the same when you get started with direct selling. Take TOTAL responsibility for your success, and you’ll be amazed at how well you can do!
You provided great points Kerwyn. All direct sellers must remember that direct selling is not your typical job. It is a business. As a business owner, you are the one responsible for the outcome of success.

your posts are always great! Thank you I always look forward to reading them!
Thank you so much. It really means a lot.
Aspiring network marketing professionals…. do your homework! On the company you’re looking at AND your upline. They absolutely are not responsible for your success or failure in your business, but they sure can make a difference.
Well said!!! Thank you Rebecca!
